About the project
The AURORA project emerges from the interplay between light, landscape, and contemporary living. Located in Miraflores, with open views of the Monsanto forest park and immediate proximity to Lisbon, the project explores a balance between urban intensity and natural calm. Designed for a young couple transitioning into a new phase of family life, the project is conceived as a home that evolves - highly functional in the present, yet adaptable for the future. Beyond responding to a defined brief, AURORA interprets a dynamic, multifaceted lifestyle in which moments of retreat coexist with social and creative living. The residence is structured as a coherent system of interconnected spaces, where interior and exterior extend seamlessly into one another, promoting continuity, comfort, and intuitive use. The result is an environment that balances spatial clarity, identity, and well-being, a solid foundation for building memories over time.

Challenge
The development of the project was driven by a set of both technical and experiential challenges. On one hand, the need to ensure programmatic flexibility, allowing the home to adapt to different stages of family life without compromising spatial coherence or architectural integrity. On the other hand, the integration of functionality and everyday resilience ensures durability, ease of maintenance, and long-term usability. The articulation between social and private areas, as well as the relationship between interior and exterior spaces, required a rigorous design approach, where proportion, circulation, and spatial hierarchy were key to achieving fluidity, clarity, and comfort. Additionally, the project addressed the challenge of balancing restraint and expression: creating a timeless foundation capable of aging gracefully, while still allowing for moments of identity, character, and subtle irreverence.

Aproach
The conceptual approach is rooted in the idea of “aurora” as a moment of transition, a balance between what begins and what endures. The project was developed through a strategy of stable structure & adaptable layers. The architectural foundation, spatial organization, primary materials, and formal language were designed to ensure timelessness, consistency, and longevity. Layered onto this base are more flexible and evolving elements, allowing for personalization and transformation over time. The layout prioritizes spatial continuity and flow, minimizing visual barriers and fostering direct relationships between social, private, and outdoor areas. The home is designed to be experienced intuitively, where transitions unfold naturally. Materiality is defined by a palette of neutral and earthy tones, combined with noble and durable materials that reinforce a sense of calm and permanence. In contrast, curated elements - art, design pieces, and expressive details - introduce rhythm, identity, and depth into the space. The result is a home that does not impose itself, but supports. A space designed to hold life as it is and as it evolves.
